Are You “72-Hour Ready?”

The 72-hour mark is a real-world tipping point.

It’s how long it can take for help to arrive after storms, blackouts, fires—even disruptions due to utilities or civil unrest. By being prepared and able to manage for the first 72 hours, families not only make sure they're self-sufficient, but we reduce the strain on emergency services and allow them to focus on those most in need.

That’s why most experts agree:
Your first preparedness goal should be simple—take care of your household for 3 days, without help.

Here’s what that means:

  • Water: 1 gallon per person, per day
  • Food: Enough shelf-stable meals and snacks for 3 days
  • Power: Flashlights, batteries, backup charging
  • Warmth: Blankets or alternate heating First aid: Basic kit + meds
  • Communication: A way to get updates (radio) and a family contact plan If this list feels like a stretch, don’t panic.

Pick one area and make it your weekend win.

QUICK TIPS:

Inventory your current food and water—what’s already in your pantry? Walk through your home at night with lights off. Is your flashlight where you think it is? Write down your top 3 emergency contacts and post them on your fridge.

P.S. Near the end of your Personal Preparedness Plan, there's an "Exercise" section with two scenarios to test your preparedness in a simulated emergency—it's the most realistic way you can test your preparedness. Check it out and plan a time to run the scenario (and don't cheat by reading ahead!).
