Introduced in 1893 and improved by Gill Brothers Seeds by 1917, this heirloom Cucurbita pepo is prized for its deep orange, slightly netted skin and exceptionally sweet, tender flesh. Fruits average 6½ inches tall, 8 inches wide, and weigh about 6½ pounds, and are celebrated for their pie quality — Amy Goldman describes the result as "the smoothest and most velvety pumpkin pie I've ever had" in The Compleat Squash.
