How to Get a GMRS Radio License in the United States (with links)

If you’re interested in using General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios in the United States, you’ll need a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). GMRS radios are popular for personal, recreational, and emergency communications due to their extended range and capabilities. This blog post will guide you through who needs a GMRS license and provide step-by-step instructions on how to obtain one.

Who Needs a GMRS License?

A GMRS license is required for anyone who intends to operate a GMRS radio in the United States with power over 2 watts. Unlike other types of radio services (like CB or FRS), GMRS requires a license for individuals or families (including their immediate relatives) to use the frequencies. Businesses cannot obtain a GMRS license; they must use other services like the Business Radio Service. Note that a HAM radio license does not permit you to use GMRS frequencies (but if you're a HAM, you already knew that).

The license allows the licensee and their immediate family members to use the GMRS frequencies. This includes spouses, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and in-laws. The license is valid for 10 years and covers the entire family, and at $35, it's a great deal.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Obtain a GMRS License

1. Prepare Your Information

  • Before starting the application process, gather all necessary information, including your personal details and a method of payment (credit/debit card) for the license fee.

2. Create an FCC User Account & Get Your FRN  (if you don’t have one)

  • Go to the FCC’s Commission Registration System (CORES).
  • Click on “Register” and follow the instructions to create an FCC Registration Number (FRN). You will need this number to apply for your GMRS license.
  • Once you have your account, log in using the email address and password you just set up.
  • Select "Register FRN" from the central box.
  • Follow the steps to confirm yourself as an INDIVIDUAL, complete the form and hit Submit.

3. Apply for a GMRS License

  • Log in at the License Manager, then click on “Apply for a New License” under the “My Licenses” heading.
  • Select “ZA – General Mobile Radio (GMRS)” from the drop-down menu and click “Continue.”
  • Follow the prompts to complete the application form, providing your personal information and answering any relevant questions. You should be able to follow along using all of the drop down menus.
  • Once you get to the summary page, if everything looks correct, click "Continue to Certify"
  • Next, you'll click the button to Continue to CORES website for payment

4. Pay the License Fee

  • Log back into CORES and select the menu item "Manager Existing FRNs | FRN Financial | Bills and Fees"
  • Then select the second option "FRN Financial"
  • Then select "View/Make Payments" under Action
  • Select "Make Payment" and you will be prompted to pay the license fee. As of 2024, the fee is $35.
  • Enter your payment information and submit the payment.

    5. Receive Your License

    • Once your application is submitted and payment is processed, you will receive your GMRS license electronically within a day or two. You can print a copy for your records.
    • Your license information will be available in the ULS, and you can use your FRN to log in and view it at any time.

The license covers your entire family and is valid for 10 years, making it a valuable investment for those who frequently use GMRS radios for recreational activities or emergency preparedness.

Follow the steps outlined above, and you’ll be on your way to enjoying the benefits of GMRS communication.

What's the best handheld GMRS Radio?

Our pick for the best handheld GMRS radio is the Rocky Talkie 5 Watt Radio. The extra power, NOAA weather channels, and ability to extend communication range with GMRS repeaters (in addition to the fact that it's shock resistant and waterproof) make it our top pick, but if you're looking to save a few bucks, the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio is also excellent and transmits with 2 watts meaning you don't need a license to operate.
